Simon & Schuster, part of CBS Corporation, is one of the Big 5 publishers. The Simon & Schuster Internship Program offers students a chance to explore the world of book publishing with a behind-the-scenes learning experience. Chosen interns work within specific departments (adult or children’s, within editorial, marketing, and publicity) where they are able to explore all aspects of the business. The program also includes mentoring relationships and networking opportunities.


The summer 2018 session will run for 8 weeks and will allow interns to work a full 35-hour work week.


Responsibilities:

  • Shadow and work alongside publishing professionals
  • Attend meetings and events
  • Participate in weekly lunch and learn programs
  • Attend speaker presentations

Requirements:

  • Must be a currently enrolled student (Juniors and Seniors or graduate students preferred)

Macmillan Publishers | Editor

Location: New York, NY
Position: Full-time
Experience: 4-5 years

Macmillan Publishing was founded by Daniel and Alexander Macmillan in London in 1843 and is another one of the Big 5 publishers. It has a number of imprints across the globe. Some of their U.S. publishers include Farrar, Straus and Giroux; Henry Holt and Company; Picador; St. Martin’s Press; Tor/Forge; Macmillan Audio; and Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group. Many of these publishers are based in New York City.

Macmillan is currently seeking “a creative, dedicated editor to acquire or develop and edit approximately 15-20 titles per year across picture book, middle grade and young adult.” The chosen candidate must have a strong passion for children’s and young adult publishing, the ability to work on a variety of projects in a fast-paced environment, and a list of publishing and entertainment industry contacts. Macmillan is “specifically looking for someone with the ability to effectively liaise with members of other departments, including sales and marketing; to work quickly and competently; and to create dynamic home grown-ideas.”

Responsibilities:

  • Edit and manage 15-20 titles per year
    • a range of picture book, middle grade, and young adult
  • Work with all departments to supervise each step of the publishing process
    • Develop 3-4 intellectual property titles a year
      • Conceive character and story, plot, and outline
      • Source writers
      • Collaborate to produce proposals
      • See manuscripts through to publication
    • Review submissions for acquisition
    • Scout pop culture and the marketplace for new ideas and trends
  • Build relationships with agents and other industry contacts
    • Maintain professional and responsive communication with authors and agents
  • Read, proofread, edit, and line edit
  • Write copy for sales materials, catalogs and book jackets
  • Effectively present titles at both internal and external sales meetings and previews, and represent Imprint within the industry

Requirements:

  • Approximately 4-5 years editing experience and/or similar project management experience
  • Relationships with agents, authors, entertainment, and/or licensing contacts
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Knows how to acquire and edit for a variety of formats and age groups from picture books to novels
  • Basic understanding of P&L/other financial aspects of publishing
  • Experience negotiating deals
  • Awareness of the children’s publishing market
  • Ability to prioritize, respond to shifting and fast-paced environment, and work independently
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Gmail and Apple computer platform
  • Interest in Pop Culture and Media
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Penguin Random House | Client Support Associate

Penguin Random House is currently looking for a Client Support Associate “who enjoys helping others and has a desire to grow within the organization.” The chosen candidate must have a passion for books and an interest in operations, systems, and knowledge of how things work. The Client Support Associate will support Penguin Random House Publisher Services (PRHPS) clients on operational and financial concerns. They will also support the PRHPS Client Support team with administrative tasks and projects.

Responsibilities:

  • Support Penguin Random House Publisher Services (PRHPS) clients
  • Support PRHPS Client Support team with administrative tasks and projects:
    • Pull, review, and distribute reports
    • Assist with setting up meetings
    • Work with internal departments to execute tasks
    • Inventory, warehousing, freight, fulfillment, and returns questions
    • eBook processes
    • General service-related questions including contractual issues and concerns
    • Sales transaction issues
    • Statement reviews
    • Systems support and ad hoc training

Requirements:

  • 2-3 years of related book experience.
