eBooks: Great Expectations for Web Standards
A W3C Workshop on Electronic Books and the Open Web Platform
Dates: Mon, Feb 11th from 1 PM to 6 PM & Tues, Feb 12th from 9 AM to 5 PM.

he workshop will be collocated with the O’Reilly Tools of Change for Publishing Conference. The goal of the workshop – organized in partnership with W3C, IDPF, and BISG – is to “bring together major players of the e-book market, including publishers, standardization organizations, booksellers, accessibility organizations, etc, in an effort to bring e-book publishing to its full potential through standardization.”
The planning committee has organized 5 discussion sessions around important e-book standardization issues, including:
- Text Presentation (CSS, Fonts)
- EPUB & Open Web Platforms
- Accessibility
- Digital Rights Management (DRM)
- Metadata
The committee is currently scouting volunteers volunteers to take minutes during each
session on an open, collaborative online platform, in real-time as the workshop progresses. Up to 7 volunteers can be accepted.
This is an excellent opportunity for Pace MS in Publishing students with a strong interest in eBooks to meet and learn from leading industry professionals as they discuss current standards issues and opportunities in eBook publishing today.
Description of Volunteer Responsibilities:
The scribe will take notes during the presentation and the discussions that follow. They should also scribe the wrap-up sessions. We will ask the attendees going to the microphone to clearly say their name and company name before raising a question or proposal.
The scribe will also take notes using an online platform called IRC. This can be done:
1. with a IRC client (there is a large number of these some are free)http://www.w3.org/Project/IRC/
Server: irc.w3.org
Available ports (choose one): 6667, 6665, 21
We will have to decide on a channel, something like #ebook.
2. using the Web interface: http://irc.w3.org/
One only needs to type in Nickname and the name of the channel to join. The scribe will type in the input field. Anyone connected to the channel can add, correct, and collaborate to the minutes.
