Requirements:

JLG editorial assistants must have a good critical eye, be able to articulate ideas both in written evaluations and group discussions, work through a high volume of material under deadline pressure, and be willing to take on various duties in our small department.

A Bachelor of Arts is required. Knowledge of proofreading and copyediting marks is a plus, as is familiarity with children’s and young adult books and the library market. Spanish proficiency and strong computer skills, especially with Excel, are extremely desirable.

Responsibilities:

The major responsibilities of the job are assisting the Editorial Director; administrative tasks including logging in and tracking submissions; reading and evaluating children’s and young adult books from prepublication materials; and writing descriptions for our catalogs and Web site.

The Junior Library Guild is a unique service that provides school and public libraries with new frontlist children’s books. We make our selections from publishers in advance of the books’ publication and distribute them to the libraries on a monthly basis. Our books range in level from preschool through mature young adult and include fiction and nonfiction.

KidSpirit Online

Position: Assistant Editor

Location: Brooklyn, NY

KidSpirit, the award-winning magazine and online community by and for youth, seeks an independent, organized, self-starter as a part-time Assistant Editor (approximately 20 hours a week). KidSpirit is an unaffiliated, non-profit quarterly magazine for 11-16 year-olds to tackle life’s big questions in an open and inclusive environment.

Requirements:

This is a multi-faceted position for someone who is highly organized, detail oriented, and enjoys taking the lead on several tasks at once. A good fit for those with a degree in English, Religion, Cultural Studies, or Philosophy, or for those with an interest in working with youth to help refine writing and critical thinking skills. 1-2 years’ experience in an editorial or management position is preferred. KidSpirit has a stable and committed staff; only applicants interested in committing to a minimum of one year for this New York-based position should apply. Responsibilities:

  • helping facilitate monthly meetings with KidSpirit’s all-youth Editorial Board, and acting as communications liaison for contributors;
  • being the point person for general inquires and correspondence;
  • proofreading and editing content on website and annual print volume;
  • managing youth memberships on website;
  • preparing, proofreading and submitting content for external publications, such as the Huffington Post;
  • creating educational Group Guides;
  • helping with KidSpirit’s annual fundraiser and other events.
