Springer Publishing Company currently has an opportunity for an experienced, motivated individual to join our Editorial Acquisitions team as an Assistant Editor. The goal of this position is to assure the smooth and efficient operation of the acquisition department, working directly with acquisition editors, authors, and all internal staff.

Key goals of position:

  • Supports Acquisitions Editors and authors in all aspects of the publishing process, from proposal to bound books
  • Coordinates prioritization and completion of assigned projects from multiple Acquisitions Editors
  • Initiates and maintains improvements to editorial work flow systems
  • Evaluates production-readiness for new manuscripts
  • In coordination with other Assistant Editor(s) and Acquisition Editors, oversees workflow of departmental Administrative Assistant
  • As appropriate, assumes responsibility for revised edition publications from contract to production for selected titles

Responsibilities:

  • Correspond with authors regarding manuscript preparation and submission details
  • Log in, review, and evaluate all manuscript materials as they are submitted
  • Track and receive missing manuscript materials from authors
  • Transmit manuscripts from Editorial to Production
  • Coordinate with departmental Administrative Assistant to:
  • Prepare, record, and route approved contracts for newly acquisitioned books
  • Maintain accuracy, integrity and currency of all departmental records and databases
  • Coordinate all permissions, author, contributor and reviewer payments
  • Administrate shipments of newly published books to authors, contributors, and endorsers
  • Manage Library of Congress registration process
  • Solicit and compile endorsements for back cover copy and promotional material
  • Attend annual professional conferences when feasible, which may involve overnight travel
  • Solicit peer reviews of book proposals and draft manuscripts of books, as directed
  • Other related duties assigned by Acquisitions Editors

Requirements:

  •  Strong writing, communication, and organizational skills
  • Strong interest in academic and professional publishing
  • Ability to prioritize projects, meet deadlines, and work independently
  • 1+ years book publishing experience
  • Experience working hands-on with manuscripts
  • Proficient in computing technologies
  • Baccalaureate degree
  • Basic understanding of permissions and use of third party materials highly desired

Position: Rights and Permissions Coordinator

Requirements:

Cambridge University Press, a leader in Academic Publishing, seeks a Rights and Permissions Coordinator to join our ELT/ESL Department. This position will be the first point of contact for the US team with regards to rights clearance and permissions checking. Responsibilities include acting as the US contact for global photo library agreements, liaising with the Photos Permissions Manager on a regular basis and advising the Content Production team.

In addition, this position will carry out rights clearance/re-clearance work as required; oversee external suppliers, clear permissions in-house and respond to version requests from overseas branches by checking rights records for legacy US titles and initiating re-clearance where necessary.
The ideal candidate will possess 2 years of related publishing experience in editorial and/or production . The candidate should also have excellent IT skills, ability to manage databases, good organizational and communication skills, the ability to work independently and a Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent.

Northstar Travel Media is currently seeking a Group Online Editor. This position is located in their Manhattan Office.

The Online Editor will oversee editorial and multimedia content and its presentation on all Northstar Meetings Group websites. He/she will develop strategies and ideas for new online features that will add value for readers, drive traffic, and create opportunities for new revenue. The Online Editor will help guide the ongoing digital transformation and social media execution that aligns content into a dynamic digital experience and increases the profile of Northstar’s websites within the meetings industry. The Online Editor should be a big-picture person with a detail-oriented personality, someone who is able to translate ideas and content from the editorial staff into engaging features on the web. The web editor will be asked to contribute editorially (reporting/writing/editing) to support various products as needed.

Responsibilities:

Develop ideas for, and oversee execution of, interactive features on the websites, coordinating with production/web designers/editorial staff as needed.
Oversee and coordinate the creation of a resource archive of educational materials and rich media content (podcasts, webinars, written resources, etc.)
Maintain the breaking news section of the website with links to industry-related news from other media outlets as well as news items from other editorial staff.
Ensure frequency of new digital content and use website/audience metrics to measure audience engagement.
Create and maintain an RSS feed for editorial content.
Proofread and make necessary changes to the website
Monitor online products of other industry associations, publications and websites.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Proven writing and editing skills.
Must have an understanding of HTML, XHTML, XML and content management systems (knowledge of Java and Flash a plus)
Demonstrated experience creating rich media content and writing for the web.
Ability to work in the fast-paced environment of the web, juggling multiple projects at once.
