Position: Assistant Editor

Gotham and Hamptons Magazines are looking for a driven Assistant Editor to join their high-performing New York team.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for conceiving and pitching stories for each issue, then executing and producing assigned stories and sections.
- Responsible for writing several stories, producing magazine-ready copy within established deadlines.
- Work with the marketing department to oversee photo section and make sure it is edit-ready for ship week.
- Work with photo editors to select art, manage photo shoots and make sure art comes in for each piece/section assigned to the Editor-in-Chief or Executive Editor.
- Represent the magazine in the community by attending/hosting events on behalf of assigned magazine.
- Meet with local power players to boost magazine presence.
- Responsible for execution of editorial-related clerical/administrative duties for the editorial team.
- Responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with the local colleges and working within the community to represent the magazine and spread awareness about it.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; or 1-2
years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. - Minimum one year editorial experience, preferably in the magazine industry.
- Experience in a style-related field a plus.
- Strong writing, editing, and research skills. Candidates should be willing to take a writing test and provide clips.
- Strong working knowledge of AP Style.
- Ability to set, manage and hold others accountable to firm deadlines.
- Strong working knowledge of MAC platform and Gmail.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Answering and placing telephone calls
- Taking dictation and keeping detailed schedules and up-to-date records of all projects
- Corresponding with clients, publishers, and managers via email and phone
- Generating expense reports
- Coordinating travel itineraries
- Tracking and processing payments
- Tracking contracts through their various stages
- Preparing submission packets
- Reading queries and evaluating manuscripts
- Keeping up to date with pop culture via internet, etc.
- Coordinating meetings
- Updating the company’s website
- Helping in the HR department upon request

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree
- 1-2 years experience at an agency or book publishing
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Lotus, and Outlook
- Superior organizational skills and very detail-oriented
- Discretion, tact, and professionalism
- Ability to communicate with various personalities
- Avid reader
- Knowledge of BAITS software a PLUS
