The program provides an introduction to the publishing industry, exposure to the diversity of OUP USA’s publishing program, and experience working in a particular publishing function.

The Internship Program spans 8 to 12 weeks during the fall, spring, and summer. Intern hours vary based on department needs and the intern’s schedule.

Specific Internship Position – Online and Scholarly Reference Editorial

The Intern will be providing support to a fast-growing online scholarly reference team at Oxford University Press USA: Oxford Handbooks Online. The Intern will be involved in all phases of editorial development of digital titles. The right candidate may have the opportunity to review and edit submissions.

Responsibilities and learning opportunities include, but are not limited to:

  • Establishing, maintaining, and frequently updating project files and records, including data entry and generation of reports and form letters
  • Corresponding with all internal and external editorial stakeholders including editors in chief, editorial board members, and commissioning editors
  • Tracking and managing submissions through various stages of editorial development
  • Researching and recruiting contributors for digital titles
  • Processing and tracking contracts and payment requests; tracking expenses against budget
  • Liaising with production and marketing departments to ensure quality of content
  • Reviewing and correcting article XML (training will be provided)

At the end of the internship, the Intern can expect to have gained valuable insight into the process through which a title moves from a proposal to a finished product. The Intern will strengthen their editing, project management, and correspondence skills, while navigating everyday publishing challenges and opportunities.

Interns will have the opportunity to meet and learn from members of other departments as well.

Requirements:

  • Highly organized with concern for details
  • Eager to take initiative
  • Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically via email and phone
  • Ability to shift quickly between multiple projects
  • Experience and familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite; in particular, familiarity with Access databases
  • Copyediting experience is a plus
  • Interest in and experience with scholarly research a plus
  • Knowledge of XML/HTML helpful, but not required

Applicants must be enrolled in a degreed program with at least one year of schooling completed, graduated from a degreed program in the past year or enrolled in a degreed program where college credit is granted for the completion of an internship.
