Rizzoli International Publications is looking for an organized, detail-oriented assistant editor to handle editorial duties related to books that we produce in conjunction with foreign publishers.

 

Co-edition responsibilities:

  • Work with editors, production managers, and foreign publishers to set, maintain, and update book publication schedules
  • Act as a liaison between editors and foreign publishers to traffic text for translation and InDesign files for typesetting, and handle any other editorial issues
  • Act as a liaison between production managers and foreign publishers to traffic final mechanical files, route blues and color proofs for approvals, and troubleshoot any production issues
  • Provide production managers with shipping and packing instructions from foreign publishers
  • Assist with Rizzoli’s French program, including providing sales materials, establishing on sale dates, and preparing purchase orders
  • Prepare presentations and marketing content for international book fairs
  • Provide presentation materials for submission to foreign publishers
  • Coordinate sending of hi-res files to foreign licensees

Buy-in responsibilities:

  • Work with originating publishers to set, maintain, and update book publication schedules
  • Review cover and layout designs with the publisher, and communicate feedback to originating publishers
  • Coordinate copyediting, typesetting (if applicable), and proofreading for books
  • Review blues and proofs for books
  • Coordinate any updates for books in reprint
  • Prepare purchase orders and shipping instructions, including coordinating drop shipments with the international sales department
  • Provide sales and publicity with any requested materials, such as art and text for sales catalogue, digital book excerpts, press images, etc.
  • Traffic, print, and review submissions

The ideal candidate will have 2-3 years of experience writing, editing and producing content for science and technology news sites. Smart story ideas, great voice, high productivity, excellent teamwork, and a passion for online journalism are musts.

They are also looking for someone with command of a beat that speaks to the Popular Science brand, such as space (private/human spaceflight, planetary science, astrophysics), consumer technology, (gadgets, cars, internet security/privacy), energy (generation, storage, distribution), robots/artificial intelligence, military/defense, and/or other topics that appeal to our audience.

Responsibilities include:

  • writing and editing daily news, explainers, feature stories, and other formats
