New Literature from Europe Festival

The New Literature from Europe Festival returns to Manhattan this December 5 & 6 for its 11th year, bringing with it nine of Europe’s most acclaimed and exciting authors. Over two days, Crossing Borders: Europe Through the Lens of Time explores an ever-changing continent from the perspective of some of Europe’s most exciting literary voices.

Whet your appetite on Friday December 5, for the literary feast to come, with readings from each of the authors in their native language:

This opening evening of readings is introduced by one of America’s premier publishers of literature in translation, New Directions Publishing President, Barbara Epler.

Saturday, December 6th, delves deeper into each of the visiting writers’ work with a series of themed panel discussions moderated by US-based award winning authors dedicated to the promotion of international literature.

Joyce Carol Oates in the Robert B. Silvers Annual Lecture

The prolific and profound author of innumerable novels, plays, and poems, Joyce Carol Oates delivers this year’s Robert B. Silvers lecture, titled “Is The Uninspired Life Worth Living?”

There is no more versatile and accomplished American writer than JOYCE CAROL OATES. The author of many books, Oates has penned best-selling novels, critically acclaimed collections of short fiction, as well as essays, plays, poetry, a recent memoir, and an unlikely bestseller, On Boxing. Her remarkable literary industry – which includes work as an editor and anthologist – spans forms, themes, topics and genres. In 2010, reflecting on the widespread esteem in which her work is held, President Obama awarded Oates the National Humanities Medal.

The Robert B. Silvers Lecture is an annual series created by Max Palevsky in recognition of the work of Robert B. Silvers, editor of the New York Review of Books.
