Utopia / Dystopia: Accidental Dystopia

This series is presented by Hauser & Wirth Publishers in association with Morbid Anatomy, a blog that surveys “the interstices of art and medicine, death and culture.” At each panel, speakers and readers question whether the idea of utopia is always doomed to become dystopia. “Is there always, truly, a serpent in the garden?”
For the third installment, author Celeste Olalquiaga will read from her story El Helicoide (The Helix), “a utopian design in Caracas, Venezuela, gone awry.”

YPG Diversity Panel: Sensitivity Readers

It’s no secret that readers embrace diversity when it comes to book characters. In an ever-growing world of diversity, writers are challenged to write characters who experience life differently than their own. In response, the Young to Publishing Group is hosting a diversity panel on the topic of “Sensitivity Readers.” Never heard of a sensitivity reader? Well, at this panel, industry professionals will discuss “what a sensitivity reader does, how they do it, why their role in the editorial process is crucial, what’s at stake if this step is missed, and more.”
The panel will be moderated by Phoebe Yeh, Vice President and Publisher of Crown Books for Young Readers. Panelists include: Patrice Caldwell, Associate Editor at Hyperion and founder of People of Color in Publishing; Tiffany Liao, Editor at Henry Holt Books for Young Readers; and Namrata Tripathi, Editorial Director at Dial Books.

Newton Literary Issue #11 Launch Reading

Newton Literary is a biannual literary journal that was “founded in 2012 by a small group of Queens writers who wanted to create a written record of the literary work that was being done in the borough.” It publishes both emerging and experienced prose writers and poets within the Queens community.
In celebration of Newton Literary‘s 11th issue, a reading and launch will occur at Kew & Willow Books, a new independent bookstore in Queens. Some of Newton Literary‘s contributors will be there presenting their work, and the night will be hosted by Russell Ricard, a Queens author and previous Newton Literary contributor.
