On Wednesday November 13th, the MS in Publishing program sponsored a Speed Mentoring event with Hachette Book Group on Zoom. Students had the option of choosing three out of eight professionals to speak to about the publishing industry, based on their personal interests or inquiries. During the event, students were divided into separate breakout rooms with their three choices and learned more about each of their experiences.

Industry Professionals

Nick Burnham – Assistant Editor, Orbit

Sam Brody – Associate Editor, Grand Central Publishing

Caitlyn Budnick – Assistant Manager, Subrights

Natassja Haught – Channel Marketing Manager, Orbit

Alvina Ling – VP, Editor in Chief, Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

Ashley Orlando – Director, Human Resources

Lauren Ortiz – Publicity Manager, Little, Brown

Patricia Alvarado – Senior Production Associate

Below is some commentary from three of the professionals that one of our MS in Publishing students was able to meet with and jot down some notes during the event.

Lauren Ortiz

“Publicity is a very personable role, and you are always on the go. Every day is literally different! There is a lot to get done and you are kept busy. I was just at Good Morning America Studios and ran into The Rock in the elevator. By 9am, I was back in the office with the agent, sending out emails, books, and I finished my night at an author event. Publicity comes with a lot of pitching and publicists work closely with other spokes of the publishing wheel.”

Alvina Ling

“I wanted to see more Asian American representation in the book community. Spread your wings or they will always see you as an assistant. Time management means having to stay adaptable, finding pockets of time to get work done, and be open! I love what I do so it is my happy place instead of just a “job”. Follow your compass, not your clock!”

Patricia Alvarado

“Book aesthetics are not the most important thing. The content of your book speaks volumes and that is what touches hearts! Entry level candidates should also not feel intimidated. They are still learning so much and want to learn so much. Take it easy and remember that you’re starting out. Just put your best foot forward.”

So many nuggets of wisdom were shared to students and the event served as much hope for those wanting to break out into the publishing world!
