On Monday, November 4th, three students from the MS in Publishing Program, along with Professor Soares, visited the AI Lab at Pace University. They met and talked with Professor Katie Todd, an alumni from our program and current co-director of the Lab, and had a terrific conversation regarding AI and its impact on the publishing industry.
The AI Lab is located in the Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Systems Offices, and although it is still in its planning and designing stages, it will offer students a place where they can learn more about Artificial Intelligence. Currently, Seidenberg is doing research focused on health care and cybersecurity.
Professor Soares, Professor Todd, and the invited students discussed topics such as workflow efficiency, copyright, plagiarism, art, and the ethics behind AI. Some of the highlights of the discussion were the addition of AI related clauses in publishing contracts, concerning AI rights and the work used to train artificial intelligence. AI is also helpful in writing or completing a book after the original author has passed away, and translating from one language to another as it can deftly handle the nuances of a language. Students and Professors also shared their perspectives on the use of AI to rewrite titles that contain racist and biased language to fit in the new standards and perspectives of the current readership. Another discussion topic included whether or not heart-based work should be delegated to a computer.
We hope this experience prompted our students to think of innovative ideas regarding Artificial Intelligence and its use in Publishing. We are thrilled the AI lab is part of Pace University and look forward to using it!
